Add a GFCI outlet

A licensed electrician installs the safety outlet with the test and reset buttons near water.

What this job involves

A GFCI outlet shuts off in a split second if power leaks toward water. Code calls for them in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and basements. The electrician replaces the outlet or adds one to protect others on the same line. If an old GFCI keeps tripping, it may be worn out, or something plugged in may be faulty. Illinois requires a licensed electrician for this.

What to have ready

  • Where you want the GFCI outlets
  • Whether an outlet keeps tripping
  • A photo of the outlet area
  • The year the house was built

What a fair price looks like

Most homeowners in our area pay between $125 and $275 for this job. Labor per outlet with the GFCI included. A licensed electrician is required.

This is a range to help you judge a quote, not a quote. The pro you are matched with gives you their own price, in writing for anything over $1,000, and you pay them directly. We charge the pro a small flat fee only after the job is done. We never ask you for payment.

What a good pro will ask you first

  • Which rooms?
  • Is there an outlet there now?
  • Does anything trip the breaker now?
  • Is the outlet near a sink or tub?

Why we only send a licensed electrical pro

Illinois leaves electrical licensing to each village, so we check the license for the town you live in before a pro sees your request. Low-voltage items like video doorbells do not need one.
