Replace a ceiling light fixture
A licensed electrician takes down the old fixture and hangs the new one on a proper box.
What this job involves
The power is shut off and the old fixture comes down. The electrician checks the box in the ceiling, since a heavy chandelier needs a box rated for its weight. The new fixture is wired, mounted, and the bulbs tested. Illinois requires a licensed electrician for this. Old homes sometimes have a box with no ground or a box that is loose, which must be fixed first.
What to have ready
- The new fixture on hand
- A photo of the old fixture and the ceiling height
- How heavy the new fixture is, from the box or website
- Whether the ceiling is vaulted or over a stairway
What a fair price looks like
Most homeowners in our area pay between $125 and $350 for this job. Labor per fixture with the fixture supplied by the homeowner. A licensed electrician is required. Heavy or high fixtures add to the range.
This is a range to help you judge a quote, not a quote. The pro you are matched with gives you their own price, in writing for anything over $1,000, and you pay them directly. We charge the pro a small flat fee only after the job is done. We never ask you for payment.
What a good pro will ask you first
- How heavy is the new fixture?
- How high is the ceiling?
- Is there a fixture there now?
- Is there a switch for it already?
Why we only send a licensed electrical pro
Illinois leaves electrical licensing to each village, so we check the license for the town you live in before a pro sees your request. Low-voltage items like video doorbells do not need one.
