Replace a switch or outlet
A licensed electrician replaces worn, loose, or dead switches and outlets.
What this job involves
The power is turned off at the breaker and checked with a tester. The old device comes out, the wires are inspected, and the new one is connected and screwed in. Cover plates go back on. Illinois requires a licensed electrician for this. Older homes may have aluminum wiring or no ground wire, which changes what can be installed safely, and the electrician will explain your options.
What to have ready
- A count of switches and outlets and which rooms
- Whether any outlet feels loose, hot, or does not work
- A photo of one outlet with the cover off, if you are comfortable
- The year the house was built
What a fair price looks like
Most homeowners in our area pay between $125 and $300 for this job. Labor for a few devices with parts included. A licensed electrician is required.
This is a range to help you judge a quote, not a quote. The pro you are matched with gives you their own price, in writing for anything over $1,000, and you pay them directly. We charge the pro a small flat fee only after the job is done. We never ask you for payment.
What a good pro will ask you first
- How many, and what rooms?
- Are they outlets, switches, or both?
- Does anything feel warm or spark?
- Do you know if the house has aluminum wiring?
Why we only send a licensed electrical pro
Illinois leaves electrical licensing to each village, so we check the license for the town you live in before a pro sees your request. Low-voltage items like video doorbells do not need one.
