Replace a garbage disposal

A licensed plumber swaps out a dead or leaking disposal and reconnects the drain.

What this job involves

The old disposal is unplugged, twisted off its mount, and removed. The new one goes on the sink flange, gets its drain connected, and plugs into the outlet under the sink. If the dishwasher drains through it, that hose is reconnected and the knockout plug removed. Illinois requires a licensed plumber for the drain connection. A disposal that only hums is often jammed and may just need a reset, which the plumber checks first.

What to have ready

  • The new disposal on hand, or the brand and horsepower you want
  • A photo under the sink
  • Whether the disposal plugs in or is hardwired
  • Whether the dishwasher drains through it

What a fair price looks like

Most homeowners in our area pay between $150 and $300 for this job. Labor with the disposal supplied by the homeowner. A licensed plumber is required. A hardwired unit may also need an electrician.

This is a range to help you judge a quote, not a quote. The pro you are matched with gives you their own price, in writing for anything over $1,000, and you pay them directly. We charge the pro a small flat fee only after the job is done. We never ask you for payment.

What a good pro will ask you first

  • Is it dead, humming, or leaking?
  • What brand and size is the old one?
  • Does it plug in under the sink?
  • Does the dishwasher drain into it?

Why we only send a licensed plumbing pro

Illinois licenses plumbers statewide, and the law covers repairs and fixture swaps, not just new construction. Every plumbing request on this site goes only to a pro whose state license and contractor registration we have checked.
