Hang interior doors

A pro hangs new prehung or slab doors so they swing clean and latch every time.

About two hours per door on siteLead-safe work if the home is pre-1978

What this job involves

A prehung door comes with its own frame and hinges. The old door and frame come out, the new one is shimmed plumb in the opening, and the trim goes back on. A slab door is just the door, and the pro cuts hinge and latch spots to match your old frame. Old openings are often out of square, and floors are not level, so the door may need trimming at the bottom. Painting the door is separate.

What to have ready

  • The number of doors and which rooms
  • The width and height of each door, and which way it swings
  • The new doors on hand or ordered
  • Photos of the current doors and trim

What a fair price looks like

Most homeowners in our area pay between $175 and $350 for this job. Labor per door with doors supplied by the homeowner. Painting is separate. Homes built before 1978 may need lead safe practices.

This is a range to help you judge a quote, not a quote. The pro you are matched with gives you their own price, in writing for anything over $1,000, and you pay them directly. We charge the pro a small flat fee only after the job is done. We never ask you for payment.

What a good pro will ask you first

  • Prehung or slab?
  • How many doors, and what sizes?
  • Which way should each door swing?
  • Is the new trim included, or are you keeping the old?
