Dimmer or smart switch
A licensed electrician installs dimmers or smart switches and makes sure they work with your bulbs.
What this job involves
A dimmer lets you lower the lights, and a smart switch lets you use a phone or voice. The electrician turns off the power, swaps the switch, and checks that the wiring has what the new switch needs. Many smart switches need a neutral wire, which older homes may not have in the box. Three way switches, where two switches run one light, need matching parts. Illinois requires a licensed electrician for this.
What to have ready
- Which lights you want on dimmers or smart switches
- The switches on hand, or the brand you want
- Whether any light is controlled from two spots
- What kind of bulbs are in the fixture
What a fair price looks like
Most homeowners in our area pay between $125 and $325 for this job. Labor for a few switches with switches supplied by the homeowner. A licensed electrician is required.
This is a range to help you judge a quote, not a quote. The pro you are matched with gives you their own price, in writing for anything over $1,000, and you pay them directly. We charge the pro a small flat fee only after the job is done. We never ask you for payment.
What a good pro will ask you first
- Which brand of switch?
- Is the light controlled from one switch or two?
- Are the bulbs LED?
- How old is the house?
Why we only send a licensed electrical pro
Illinois leaves electrical licensing to each village, so we check the license for the town you live in before a pro sees your request. Low-voltage items like video doorbells do not need one.
