Fix a running toilet
A licensed plumber replaces the inside parts so the toilet stops running and wasting water.
What this job involves
A running toilet is usually a worn flapper or a fill valve that will not shut off. The plumber shuts off the water, drains the tank, and replaces the inside parts with a rebuild kit. The tank bolts and the seal between tank and bowl are checked too. Illinois requires a licensed plumber for this. A toilet that leaks at the floor is a different problem and needs the wax seal replaced.
What to have ready
- What the toilet does, runs all the time or now and then
- The toilet brand, often printed inside the tank lid
- Whether the shutoff valve by the toilet turns
- Whether there is water on the floor
What a fair price looks like
Most homeowners in our area pay between $125 and $275 for this job. Labor with the rebuild parts included. A licensed plumber is required.
This is a range to help you judge a quote, not a quote. The pro you are matched with gives you their own price, in writing for anything over $1,000, and you pay them directly. We charge the pro a small flat fee only after the job is done. We never ask you for payment.
What a good pro will ask you first
- Does it run all the time or on and off?
- What brand is the toilet?
- Is there any water on the floor around it?
- Does the shutoff valve work?
Why we only send a licensed plumbing pro
Illinois licenses plumbers statewide, and the law covers repairs and fixture swaps, not just new construction. Every plumbing request on this site goes only to a pro whose state license and contractor registration we have checked.
