Lever door handles
A pro swaps round knobs for levers that open with a push of the hand or elbow.
What this job involves
Round knobs are hard to turn with arthritis or a full hand, and levers open with a push. The pro removes each knob and fits a lever in the same holes. Strike plates are adjusted so the doors latch without force. Bathroom doors get a lever with a push button lock that can be opened from outside in an emergency. Older doors sometimes need the hole drilled out a little.
What to have ready
- A count of doors and which need locks
- The levers on hand, or a finish in mind
- A photo of a current knob and the door edge
- Whether any door sticks now
What a fair price looks like
Most homeowners in our area pay between $100 and $300 for this job. Labor with levers supplied by the homeowner.
This is a range to help you judge a quote, not a quote. The pro you are matched with gives you their own price, in writing for anything over $1,000, and you pay them directly. We charge the pro a small flat fee only after the job is done. We never ask you for payment.
What a good pro will ask you first
- How many doors?
- Which need a lock, and which are plain?
- Are the current knobs standard size?
- Left handed or right handed doors, or do you need reversible levers?
