Install a ceiling fan
A licensed electrician mounts a ceiling fan on a fan rated box and wires the light and fan controls.
What this job involves
A fan is heavier than a light and moves, so it needs a box rated for fans screwed to a joist or brace. The electrician checks the box, replaces it if needed, and assembles and hangs the fan. The fan and light are wired to the switch or a remote. Illinois requires a licensed electrician for this. Replacing a light box with a fan brace from below is common and adds a little time.
What to have ready
- The fan on hand
- Whether there is a light or a fan there now
- The ceiling height and whether it is sloped
- Whether you want a wall switch, a remote, or pull chains
What a fair price looks like
Most homeowners in our area pay between $150 and $400 for this job. Labor with the fan supplied by the homeowner. A licensed electrician is required. A new fan rated box adds to the range.
This is a range to help you judge a quote, not a quote. The pro you are matched with gives you their own price, in writing for anything over $1,000, and you pay them directly. We charge the pro a small flat fee only after the job is done. We never ask you for payment.
What a good pro will ask you first
- Is there a fixture there now?
- Do you know if the box is fan rated?
- How high is the ceiling?
- Do you want a separate switch for the light?
Why we only send a licensed electrical pro
Illinois leaves electrical licensing to each village, so we check the license for the town you live in before a pro sees your request. Low-voltage items like video doorbells do not need one.
