Child or pet gates

A pro mounts a safety gate to the wall or banister so it holds at the top of the stairs.

What this job involves

A pressure gate is fine in a doorway, but the top of the stairs needs a gate screwed into the wall. The pro mounts the hinges into studs or a banister with an adapter kit, so no holes in the railing. The gate is set to swing away from the stairs and latch firmly. Odd width openings and angled walls are common and need a bit of fitting.

What to have ready

  • The width of each opening
  • The gate on hand, or the one you plan to buy
  • Photos of the opening, including the banister
  • Whether it is for a child, a pet, or both

What a fair price looks like

Most homeowners in our area pay between $75 and $200 for this job. Labor for one or two gates with gates supplied by the homeowner.

This is a range to help you judge a quote, not a quote. The pro you are matched with gives you their own price, in writing for anything over $1,000, and you pay them directly. We charge the pro a small flat fee only after the job is done. We never ask you for payment.

What a good pro will ask you first

  • How wide is the opening?
  • Top of stairs, bottom, or a doorway?
  • Is one side a banister instead of a wall?
  • What gate did you buy?
