Install a bathroom exhaust fan
A licensed electrician replaces or adds a bathroom fan and makes sure it vents outside.
What this job involves
A fan pulls steam out so mold does not grow. The old fan housing comes out of the ceiling and the new one goes in, sized for the room. The duct is connected so the air goes outside, not into the attic. Illinois requires a licensed electrician for the wiring. In older homes the old fan often vents nowhere, and running a new duct through the attic adds work.
What to have ready
- A photo of the current fan from below
- Whether there is attic access above the bathroom
- The size of the bathroom
- The new fan on hand or a brand in mind
What a fair price looks like
Most homeowners in our area pay between $250 and $700 for this job. Labor with the fan supplied by the homeowner. A licensed electrician is required. A new duct to the outside adds to the range.
This is a range to help you judge a quote, not a quote. The pro you are matched with gives you their own price, in writing for anything over $1,000, and you pay them directly. We charge the pro a small flat fee only after the job is done. We never ask you for payment.
What a good pro will ask you first
- Is there a fan now, or is this new?
- Can you get into the attic above it?
- Does the current fan vent outside?
- Do you want a light or heater in the fan?
Why we only send a licensed electrical pro
Illinois leaves electrical licensing to each village, so we check the license for the town you live in before a pro sees your request. Low-voltage items like video doorbells do not need one.
