Install a range hood

A pro mounts a new hood over the stove and a licensed electrician wires it in.

Half a day on siteLicensed electrical pro required in Illinois

What this job involves

The old hood or microwave comes down and the new one goes up at the right height. If the hood vents outside, the pro connects it to the existing duct. If there is no duct, the hood runs in recirculating mode with a filter. Wiring the hood to the house power needs a licensed electrician. Old homes sometimes have a duct that is too small or no duct at all, which changes the plan.

What to have ready

  • The width of your stove and the new hood
  • Photos of the current hood and the cabinet above it
  • Whether the old hood vents outside or just recirculates
  • The new hood on hand or ordered

What a fair price looks like

Most homeowners in our area pay between $250 and $650 for this job. Labor with the hood supplied by the homeowner. A licensed electrician is required for the wiring.

This is a range to help you judge a quote, not a quote. The pro you are matched with gives you their own price, in writing for anything over $1,000, and you pay them directly. We charge the pro a small flat fee only after the job is done. We never ask you for payment.

What a good pro will ask you first

  • Is this a plain hood or an over the range microwave?
  • Does the current one vent outside?
  • Is there a cabinet above the stove?
  • Is there an outlet in that cabinet now?

Why we only send a licensed electrical pro

Illinois leaves electrical licensing to each village, so we check the license for the town you live in before a pro sees your request. Low-voltage items like video doorbells do not need one.
