Kitchen backsplash tile

A pro sets tile on the wall between your counter and upper cabinets, then grouts and seals it.

Two days on site

What this job involves

The pro removes any old backsplash and preps the wall. Tile goes on with thinset, cut to fit around outlets and windows. The next day the grout goes in and the edges get caulked. Outlet covers get spacers so they sit flush with the tile. Walls behind old backsplash sometimes have damaged drywall that needs patching first.

What to have ready

  • The square feet of wall to cover, counter to cabinet
  • The tile on hand, with 10 percent extra
  • Photos of the wall, including outlets and window edges
  • Whether there is an old backsplash to remove

What a fair price looks like

Most homeowners in our area pay between $500 and $1,300 for this job. Labor with tile supplied by the homeowner. Thinset and grout are included. Removing an old tile backsplash adds to the range.

This is a range to help you judge a quote, not a quote. The pro you are matched with gives you their own price, in writing for anything over $1,000, and you pay them directly. We charge the pro a small flat fee only after the job is done. We never ask you for payment.

What a good pro will ask you first

  • What tile is it, and how big are the pieces?
  • How many square feet is the wall area?
  • How many outlets and switches are in the tile area?
  • Is there old tile to come off first?
