Repair squeaks and subfloor
A pro screws down loose subfloor to stop squeaks or replaces a soft, damaged section.
What this job involves
Squeaks come from subfloor rubbing on the joists. The pro finds the joist, then drives screws through the floor or carpet with a special kit, or from below if the basement ceiling is open. A soft spot means the subfloor is damaged, often from a leak, and that section is cut out and replaced. Stairs squeak the same way and can be fixed from below or with shims. Finished floors above the repair may need to come up.
What to have ready
- Where the squeaks or soft spots are
- What the floor is covered with, carpet, wood, or tile
- Whether the basement ceiling below is open or finished
- Photos of any soft or stained area
What a fair price looks like
Most homeowners in our area pay between $150 and $500 for this job. Labor for a few squeaks or one small subfloor patch. Replacing finished flooring above the patch is extra.
This is a range to help you judge a quote, not a quote. The pro you are matched with gives you their own price, in writing for anything over $1,000, and you pay them directly. We charge the pro a small flat fee only after the job is done. We never ask you for payment.
What a good pro will ask you first
- Is it a squeak or a soft spot?
- What is the floor covering?
- Can you get under the floor from the basement?
- Has there been a leak nearby?
