Tile a bathroom floor
A pro removes the old floor and sets new tile, with the toilet pulled and reset.
What this job involves
The toilet and vanity base come out so the tile can run wall to wall. The old floor is removed down to the subfloor, and a cement board or membrane goes down. Tile is set from a center line so the cuts look even at the walls. After grout, the toilet goes back with a new seal and the base trim is reinstalled. Soft subfloor near the toilet is common in older homes and must be fixed first.
What to have ready
- The floor size in feet, both ways
- The tile on hand, with 10 percent extra
- Photos of the floor and around the toilet
- Whether the vanity is staying
What a fair price looks like
Most homeowners in our area pay between $700 and $1,600 for this job. Labor for a small bathroom with tile supplied by the homeowner. Backer board and grout are included. Subfloor repair is extra. Resetting the toilet needs a licensed plumber in some villages.
This is a range to help you judge a quote, not a quote. The pro you are matched with gives you their own price, in writing for anything over $1,000, and you pay them directly. We charge the pro a small flat fee only after the job is done. We never ask you for payment.
What a good pro will ask you first
- How big is the floor?
- What is on the floor now?
- Does the floor feel soft anywhere?
- What size tile did you pick?
