Walk in shower conversion
A pro removes the tub and builds a low or no curb shower that is easy to step into.
What this job involves
Stepping over a tub wall is the biggest fall risk in the house. The old tub comes out and a licensed plumber moves the drain and valve for a shower, as Illinois requires. A pan or tile floor goes in with a low curb or none at all, and the walls get tile or a solid panel kit. Grab bars, a bench, and a handheld shower are planned in from the start. Old water damage under the tub is common and must be fixed before the new floor goes in.
What to have ready
- Photos of the current tub and bathroom
- The tub size and bathroom size
- Whether you want tile or a solid panel kit
- Who will use it and whether they use a walker or wheelchair
- Where the main water shutoff is
What a fair price looks like
Most homeowners in our area pay between $4,000 and $9,500 for this job. Labor for a tub to shower conversion with the pan, panels or tile, and fixtures supplied by the homeowner. A licensed plumber is required.
This is a range to help you judge a quote, not a quote. The pro you are matched with gives you their own price, in writing for anything over $1,000, and you pay them directly. We charge the pro a small flat fee only after the job is done. We never ask you for payment.
What a good pro will ask you first
- Tile or a panel kit?
- Low curb or no curb?
- Walker, wheelchair, or just easier stepping?
- Is there a bathroom below this one?
Why we only send a licensed plumbing pro
Illinois licenses plumbers statewide, and the law covers repairs and fixture swaps, not just new construction. Every plumbing request on this site goes only to a pro whose state license and contractor registration we have checked.
