Smoke and CO detectors
A pro replaces battery smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in every bedroom and hallway.
What this job involves
Illinois now requires 10 year sealed battery smoke alarms in most homes without hardwired units. The pro takes down the old alarms, mounts the new ones in each bedroom, the hallway, and each floor, and tests them. Carbon monoxide alarms go within 15 feet of bedrooms. This covers battery units. Hardwired alarms that connect to the house wiring need a licensed electrician to replace, and the pro will tell you which kind you have.
What to have ready
- A count of bedrooms and floors
- A photo of a current alarm from below
- Whether the alarms are battery or wired
- The new alarms on hand, or a brand in mind
What a fair price looks like
Most homeowners in our area pay between $100 and $250 for this job. Labor for battery units supplied by the homeowner. Hardwired units require a licensed electrician and are quoted separately.
This is a range to help you judge a quote, not a quote. The pro you are matched with gives you their own price, in writing for anything over $1,000, and you pay them directly. We charge the pro a small flat fee only after the job is done. We never ask you for payment.
What a good pro will ask you first
- Are the current alarms battery or wired?
- How many bedrooms and floors?
- Do you have a CO alarm now?
- Is there a gas furnace or water heater?
